CONTROVERSIAL ISSUES

Social, Ethical, and Legal Problems  with Cancer Treatments

SOCIAL ISSUES

  • Patients and family's can both endure social and emotional problems after the treatments.

  • For example children diagnosed with Leukemia go through childhood problems- juggling the fact they have cancer and trying to be a normal child.

  • All cancer patients suffer dealing with cancer and harsh treatments, and trying to balance their normal life.

  • Cancer affects more than just physical and moves into emotional, physiological and spiritually affect the patient.

  • Due to the fact cancer treatments tend to be strong, the human body has various types of reactions, people have trouble adjusting to their new body.

  •  Not to mention all the financial problems that arise through expensive treatments can cause additional stress and more stumbling blocks.

  • Although ethical issues arise with most testing of treatments, and such process, cancer treatments are no different. Two things which are always very controversial, are an use of animals and safety of humans on non-tested medicine.

  • Animal testing has always been  controversial topic because it s perceived as animal cruelty ; along with the fact that new therapies such as immunotherapy  harder to test since it s more specialized.

  • However there still needs to be a ways to test treatments without endangering a life of a human, and so trial are necessary to test drugs for humans.

  • Not to mention the cost-effectiveness of the research ma end up not being cost effective, which also leads to expensive treatments the public is unable to attain due to high prices.

  • Poor cost-effectiveness has many downfalls, and also leads to how much is insurance supposed to cover for such expensive treatments.

LEGAL ISSUES

  • Cancer patients go through a series of possible problems through consent forms, financial situations,  and not to mention the cancer patients family of having to be there and leave work, etc.
  • An extremely important thing to know is the Patient Bill of Rights made in 1998 consisting of specific rights the patient has.
