TIMELINE

History of moderation of Cancer Treatments

3000 BC

First origin of

cancer was

discovered in

Egypt with

evidence from

books discuss-

ing removal of tumors, and with an end result of no cure.

Giovanni Morgagni

of Padua did

autopsies, which

became a  base for

oncology.

1728-1793

John Hunter believed

certain (ones that

hadn't invaded tissue)

tumors could be

removed surgically.

1903

The first use of

Radiation was

used to treat

two Russian

patients who

had skin cancer, due to Marie Curie’s discovery of the element Radium

 in 1898.

1960

Philadelphian researchers discover a chromosomal translocation seen in most Leukemias, which took scientist a step further to be the first genetic mutation to be targeted with a treatment known as Gleevec.

2003

The Human Genome is decoded which allows gene screening to look for cancer.

The Clinical Trials Cooperative Group Program is established by the U.S. National Cancer Institute due to screening it has brought breakthroughs in chemotherapy for breast and colon cancers.

Began to use

brachytherapy,

which is applying

little seed of

radiation usually

in prostate gland,

which only

affects tumor.

New T- cells

respond with

Chronic

Lymphocytic

Leukemia is presented as a cure.

19th Century

Rudolf Virchow founded cellular pathology, and improved surgery (by telling surgeon if the operation had completely removed cancer) and allowed understanding of the damage cancer caused to an extent.

By using drug aminopterin, Sydney Faber is able to get the first ever partial remission, and then leads him to 10 more remission cases.

Chemotherapy

called MOPP cures

up t0 50% of

patients with

Hodgkin

Lymphoma.

Rituximab is used for patients with B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma that no longer responds to other treatments (first FDA Targeted Cancer Drug).

1958

NCI Scientist think of using “Combination Chemotherapy” (a mixture of drugs) which leads to remission in both adult and children with acute Leukemia.

1977

By using cisplatin, vinblastine and bleomycin, it can cure 70 percent of patients with advanced testicular cancer (modern day cures 95%).

2009

Herceptin begins to show

benefit for breast cancer.

Targeted therapy  such as  immunotherapy, is starting to be one of the most precise medicine–based approaches. Immunotheray directly works as  molecular targets, new types of treatment, and new combination to attack cancer.
