INNOVATORS IN MODERATION OF CANCER TREATMENTS

Over the course of the years, scientists have tried to find a cure for cancer. Although the cure has not been found, the science world still pushes for the cure by finding out more knowledge and creating better technology. Companies like BioFluidica Inc., Argos Theraputic Inc., and  Cancer Genetics Inc. all research in the cancer field, by either making instruments or running clinics. Other contributors to the moderation of cancer are the  University of Cambridge, University of California Davis, and Standford University. Not to mention Dr. Brain J. Druker who discovered Gleevec and Dr. William Sindelar founded the intraoperative radiation therapy.

Cancer Genetics Inc.
Durham, NC

Cancer Genetics is also a company that works with personalized medicine in the field of oncology; the site also performs clinical pharmacogenomic testing, the study of how your genes affect your body's response to medication.

BioFluidica Inc.
San Diego, CA

Biofluidica is a private biotechnology company with a core focus of of research and development. The company creates instruments to better and have personalized medicine. For example, they are developing instuments to isolate and alalyze circulating biomarkers, specifically circulating tumor cells in cancer patients, which is how they have contributed to the moderation of cancer treatments.

University of Cambridge
England

Researchers at the University of Cambridge have discovered a new drug known as PARP- inhibitors. The drug is named Lynparza and was a  major breakthrough in ovarian cancer. In the clinical trials, there were mild side effects, compared to normal toxic treatments, and with overall patient survival treatments. The drug research originally began in the mid-1990s by a lab professor Steve Jackson and was continued. Lynparza, unlike other cancer treatments, makes the cancer cell sick by exploiting its weaknesses in its' DNA.

University of California Davis
United States

Davis has begun researching immunotherapy as a strategy to target the patients cancer. Immunotherapy is treating the disease by using something which stimulates a response. For cancer that something could be bacterial infections which stimulate a response and cause remission. Scientists believe immunotherapy and chemo-radiation will have better results.

 Standford University
United States

Stanford has found a cancer-associated protein called Myc.  This protein protects the tumor cell from host immune system. This then promotes  a protein which causes cell division and has an ability to outwit the immune system. By finding this protein it can lead to ways to stop the cancer.

Dr. Brian J. Druker
Discovery of Gleevec

Gleevec has been discovered by oncologist Brain J. Druker targeted with patients with Leukemia or Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia. Before this, most patients choices were bone marrow transplants, which were rare, or interferon,  with a side effect of an awful flu with only in good cases living one more year. With this new drug, it fights cancer by turning off an enzyme that causes the cell to be cancerous, and multiply rapidly, although it does not treat all cancers this is a step into the future.

Dr. William Sindelar
Intraoperative Radiation Therapy

Intraoperative radiation therapy is  “a technique for maximizing the radiation dose where it is needed most while attempting to minimize toxicity to normal structures". This process is done during the of a tumor. This new innovative therapy gives the patient a better chance of never having to have costly, dangerous full body therapy again. Since this provides a cheaper alternative, and since each cancer case varies this is a big step forward in moderation of cancer treatments.
